How Media Spreads- Jenkins

Media is easily spread so people can view it. There are two ways media can spread: circulation and distribution. Circulation is the flow of ideas and is a diversified experience. Distribution is trying to impose ones own views onto others (a more unified approach). These two methods are implemented by various platforms to keep the viewer on their site. The spreadability of media is also important to understand; it is the technical resources that make it easier to circulate kinds of media. This spreadability also correlates to the stickiness of the media. The spreadability circulates media but the stickiness refers how well that information can make a person spend time on one page.

Are we passive viewers?

This idea of passive or participatory viewing of media is something to be aware of. When we view media that is distributed and curated for our viewing, all in efforts to distract the user. We are passively looking at this media. It is curated to keep us there and this often limits us to predisposed world. We must acknowledge this. Media has the tendency to suck us in. Viral media sucks us in. We no longer think about the information being shown to us, blinded by the constant changes and never-ending scrolling. What is it that Jenkins is telling us?

Spreadability!

Rather than being sucked in, question why you are being sucked in to the media you are viewing. How accurate is it? Spreadable media allows the user to curate what they want and how they will share it. It allows us to ask the questions. It allows the user to influence others and shape their social network rather than have it be shaped for them. This diversified approach should be what people aim to use media for. Too often people look at something for no reason without question. We need to think differently and offer alternative solutions that gives everyone the opportunity to think. Stickiness eliminates this chance.
